Humanity is not in good shape on the planet earth. Many governments fail and are overrun by their populace. Half of the world's population has been lost to conflict or starvation.

A single government controls the entire North American continent, The United American States [UAS]. To protect their borders, Albert, Jordan’s father and chief scientist in the UAS invents a protection system which circles the entire North America continent.

Albert creates a massive AI quantum computer although they were banned in the 2040’s because AI attempted to take over industrial production all over the world. Albert's health is failing so he invents a way to connect his brain to the quantum computer and places himself in perpetual suspended animation. He then creates a robot called Q to take his place in the UAS society as Albert.

Keegan, a contractor who worked on The Fence returns to the UAS after being banished, sent outside the Fence, by Albert. Albert’s son Jordan and Eva are married. Government regulations threaten to terminate Eva’s child due to a birth defect. Jordan and Eva are forced into the hands of a clandestine group for safe delivery of their child. Their child is taken from the after birth. The couple searches for their child for four years, looking for locations where he might be kept and educated.

Keegan sneaks back into the UAS to harass and or kill Albert. He looks for any way to get revenge against him.
